Cold. Utter Cold.
Dear faithful readers:
By the time you read this, I may be dead. Frozen solid in the wake of this winter misery we are having. Last night, the low was 1.6° F (-16.9° C). I can’t remember it being this cold in my history here in Moab. It is supposed to be colder tonight.
Two nights ago, we got 8 inches of snow. This is the most snow Moab has had since I was a little kid. It is usually far too dry here to snow like that. Roads are slick and crunchy, and the contents of my sinuses freezes every time I go outside.
Honestly, snow is beautiful, and some part of me wants to like it. But I don’t. I like winter where the leaves turn colors, and fall off the trees, and that’s where it ends. It doesn’t need to snow, or even frost. I like that the seasons change, and there is a chill in the air. It’s sad that the weather makes it dangerous to travel, and too cold to go outside.
Here are a few photos of the snow in the yard.
Driving around town.
Thanks for stopping by. Tomorrow, I am off on the train, headed for Winnemucca.

Oh, it looks so nice and clean! I love it … from the distance.
Enjoy your trip to even lower temps (at least tonight) and permanent ice and snow in Winnemucca.
Jürgen
Great pics but YUCK!!!
But do miss a little snow
oh yeah….we’ve got some of that stuff here too!
Make a snowman, have some hot choclate and call it a day!
LOL! we are supposed to have our first temps in the 20s tonight. I guess tonight will be my first night with heat in the GH. When I read your blog title, a thought came to my mind. What did the calf say to the cow when it got cold? “Udder cold!”
LOL hang in there gal! Spring is right around the block, after winter.

We are having almost record cold here in Portland, too, but it’s not as bad as you guys! Annecy’s jaw dropped when I told her it was 1 where you are – it’s 18 here now. The kids are staying inside at school all day. Next week they are predicting it will go up into the 50′s for a couple of days, hurray!
Kate,
A few things…..
1) In total agreement with you on where winter can end – however brutal reality is, I’d like to wave my wand and make our current -10C temps, with a dusting of snow, go away.
2) Thanks for providing the temp in Celsius, too! Every little bit helps when adapting to my new country.
3) Our wind turbines in SE Wyoming are supposed to run between 40C and -40C – it was, with the wind chill, -50C there yesterday.
4) I think Celsius and Fahrenheit equal each other at -44.
5) You could have been in Saskatoon.
6) Have a great time in Winnemucca – get some top dressing from there to celebrate.
Oy vey! NICE SNOW LOAD GIRL!! Stay warm and have an awesome X-Mas!!
Have fun Katie! Maybe it’s warmer in Winnemucca.
Jürgen – That’s how I feel about snow – it’s beautiful and clean, from a distance.
Uncle Roger – That’s why we have cars and airplanes. So we can drive to snow, and so we can quickly escape when we are done!
Elaine – That would be nice. However, I am traveling today, and can’t just curl up by the fire.
Bill – he he he! That’s cute! It IS ‘udder cold’. Sorry to hear it’s colder than normal there, too.
Catherine – Yes, yes, yes. 50s would be GREAT! Can’t wait for summer.
JeffCactusMcHarris – What I am really taking away from your comment is: It’s not Saskatoon. YEA!
Markus – Whew…the snow is starting to melt. I prefer a GREEN xmas.
Dana – That’s what I am hoping for. …and thanks! I will see you when I get back.
Have a GREAT trip Katie!
Peace, Love & Happiness,
Magpie
My teeth are chattering just thinking of it. it is very blustery and cold here in PA today but only in the low 40′s. i can’t stand this. i would not even venture out to feed my birdies in the teens – well yes it would. Have fun on your trip and looking forward to hearing about it.
Lorraine
Just one quarter mile up the road from Katie it was -4.8 F. (that’s correct, minus)this morning and the high 22 F. We’re trying to keep the birds fed. They seem to be coming by the hundred. Poor guys. This too shall end. Soon, hopefully.
You’re all a bunch of wimps. Get out there and take a polar bear bath. Then you can appreciate cars, airplanes, fires and summer.
It has been mostly in the 40′s here around Phila. It was pouring today. I know sooner or later it will go down to shivering temperatures. Have a great trip and take lots of pictures.
ya– that cold sucks. be glad it was 1 degree. we have been in the negatives until the last couple days. a perfect winter would be a foot of snow and warm temps– cuz i love the snow but i too hate the cold! geez katie– how did we ever survive logan? well, hope you had a great trip! can’t wait to read your blog!
Yahoo! John and I haven’t stopped laughing since we saw the news report that weekend about how Moab got more snow that Logan!!! Neener-neener! Though, honestly, I’m about to trade places. Still getting more new snow up here, though nothing like it is in Idaho I’m told. The snow I can definitely handle-it’s the freeze that follows that kills me! Hang in there and wave to Winnemucca for us!
