Spring! (I think)
Hi, folks! I think spring may finally be coming to southeastern Utah. Flowers are coming up, birds are changing colors and singing (rather than the sad chirping I have heard all winter), and the temperatures outside have been tolerable. Thank GOD it’s finally happening! I wasn’t sure I was going to survive.
A few days ago, there were several lesser goldfinches in our trees. They are turning a lovely shade of daffodil yellow, probably to attract a domestic partner for the season. I don’t think these guys mate for life. This one was very cooperative.
My flowers are starting to bloom, too. They are later than usual, but hey – what can you expect after the longest, coldest winter EVER?! *I may be exaggerating a little here…but not much* I have lots of daffodils right now, and the grape hyacinths (which usually come along quite a bit before the daffodils) are just getting started. There are literally thousands of grape hyacinths pushing their little heads up through the foliage. I can’t wait until they all bloom!
Since we had extra moisture over the winter (more than 40 inches of snow, overall – VERY unusual), I have many, many tulips pushing up buds, too. I can’t wait for all of them to bloom! Here is my first REAL Hyacinth, which doesn’t look all that happy, but at least it tried:
Flowers always make me happy. Happy Spring!

Hi Katie,
I love the refreshed look and spring colors on your blog page! I’m stoked to see flowers blooming too. I’ve been seeing lots of Perry’s Lomatum in the desert. Awesome photos of the Lesser Goldfinch. Thanks for sharing!
Peace, Love & Happiness,
Magpie
Beautiful pictures! Your ‘blog did make me feel that spring is here.
Sigh…We just got about 8 inches of snow. So much for grass or flowers or anything blooming.
once in a great while I will see a flash of yellow and see a gold finch. lucky you to have them frequently. Vermont has them in flocks but that is the only other place I have seen them in abundance.
Katie,
This week saw the first Hedgehog Cactus and Saguaro bloom. It was in the upper 80′s.
Today is freezing at 65 F.
Oh the desert is painted with wildflowers and critters are making more critters.
We’d love to see ya down this a way B 4 it gets a bit warm!
Enjoy Spring,
Ed and Linda
Thanks for stopping by!
Maggie – Thanks! I am always happy to see the Goldfinches. If you read this again, when does that orchid bloom on the Kane Springs road?
Sonja (AKA ‘mom’) – Yes…just before the SNOWSTORM this afternoon…UGH.
Janet – yeah, we got some snow here, too. Although, I don’t think it was as bad as it was for you.
Lorraine – I’m surprised you don’t get more goldfinches around those parts. Seems like they should be there.
Ed – I am not sure when we’ll be able to come down that way, as it is tourist season once again, and Moab is CRAWLING with them. I’d love to see some of your wildflower pictures!
Again, you are soaking up the beauty in Moab. Lots of color and things to look at and thankfully sharing with us back here in the east. Thanks.
Beautiful pictures. I hardly get any birds in my backyard except for the usual house wrens, and doves. Years ago we had an abundance of birds in our area, but the last few years it hasn’t been that way.
Wow, there really is some spring going on in Utah after all! Gotta love April 1st jokes! BTW: just on the heads up, Brittany also had her baby girl that same day. It seems that was meant to be a big day of changes for everyone! You’ll have to try and get some pictures of the rocks performing their annual spring light show for us (man, do I miss the way the rocks would glow on a warm spring day after the mist has burned off…)
We’ll be thinking of you!
Hey KATIE!
I gots my new computer today! HAzzah! Weather looks lovely there! Missing Moab and you…will be back in June.
