Adventures in Food

Day Six – Corpus Christi

Today was sort of a rest day.  We went out for lunch to Dos Comales.  I had a really delicious fish dish for lunch.  It had white wine cream sauce, and sauteed tomatoes, onions, mushrooms and cilantro on it.  Rich had carne asada tacos.

Rich gave in and took me to Hans and Pat Suter Wildlife preserve, so I could see more birds.  The number of water birds at this tiny park has always amazed me. That very alert-looking duck is a Northern Shoveler.

Last night, we went to Landry’s Seafood House for dinner.  The food was amazing.  I had a broiled seafood platter, and Rich had a lobster tail.  WOW!

Day Four – Ft. Stockton To Sanderson The Long Way

Okay, so I missed a day.  I only missed it because the cute little town of Sanderson, TX had little to no technological connectivity.  Our little motel had no wireless internet (although it said it did), and I could have posted from my phone, but there was no cell phone signal, either.  *Le Sigh*

From the beginning of day 4:  We left Fort Stockton at about 7:00am, headed south.  The weather was beautiful, and as we drove south, the sun was warm and lovely.  We drove through Alpine, TX, and then Marfa (famed for its lights).  We drove right past the Official Marfa Lights viewing platform, and part of me wished that it had been dusk, so we could have observed.

Not too long after Marfa, we reached Presidio, TX.  Presidio was kind of a large dump, but the weather was beautiful, and we headed down Hwy 170, which runs from Presidio through Big Bend National Park.  This drive was fairly amazing.  The vegetation (my favorite kind – cacti and desert plants) was great, and the scenery was spectacular.

We got to visit the ‘Contrabando’ movie set on hwy 170.  Some great photos were taken there.  It’s right on the Rio Grande, and the setting is perfect.  Has anyone out there seen the movie?  I don’t know anything about it.  Here are some photos.

We had a little picnic lunch at a place in Big Bend called ‘Dugout Wells’, where there was aparently an artesian well, and lots of plant and bird life.  Also, I did the ‘Chihuahua Desert Nature Trail’ hike, where I heard what I am SURE was a javelina in the bushes, rooting around, but couldn’t get it to come out, no matter how much I grunted and snorted.  I KNOW I sounded just like a javelina, too.  I did get a fairly decent photo of what I think is a Say’s Phoebe.

After leaving the National Park, we drove north through Marathon to Sanderson, TX.  We got a room at the very cute Outback Oasis motel (I highly recommend it.  Cheap, clean, and very cute.  What else is there?!), and then headed off to dinner at ‘Dairy King’ (Yeah…he he he) – which looked like it was closed – and had some great burgers, and I had a pile of fried okra that was GREAT.

When we got back to the motel, Rich took me with him to the office, and we went to check out the owner’s collection of reptiles.  They were in a little room off the main office, and there were bunches of snakes, and a few lizards and other creatures.  It was a surprising thing to have in a motel lobby in a little town, but really fascinating, and obviously well cared-for.

It was a long day!  Thanks for visiting, and commenting!
